Ballast Point Wins California Distillery of the Year For a Second Year in a Row

San Diego distillery wins California Distillery of the Year and three medals in International Spirits Competitions and Tastings

December 2, 2014 (San Diego, CA) – At the 2014 New York International Spirits Competition (NYISC) Ballast Point Brewing and Spirits was named the “California Distillery of the Year”. This is the second year in a row that Ballast Point has received this award. Ballast Point’s Three Sheet White Rum and Three Sheets Barrel Aged Rum were also awarded Bronze medals at the competition.

“We were honored to receive this award last year and are again humbled to be given this honor for a second year in a row,” said Jack White, founder of Ballast Point Brewing and Spirits. “From the first post-prohibition distillery to again being named the California Distillery of the Year, we are constantly amazed at the growth that has occurred.”

This was followed by the first award for Ballast Point’s Opah which received Silver award at the 2014 International Review of Spirits. Opah, an herbal liquor characterized by warm licorice flavors and notes of cinnamon, received a “Highly Recommend” distinction with 87 points.

“With Opah launching just a few months ago, we are ecstatic to see it already receiving honors,” explained Yuseff Cherney, Ballast Point’s COO & Head Brewer/Head Distiller, “the continued recognition we have received from this and similar awards help push us to continue to put our own stamp on craft spirits as we do with our award-winning beers.”

Ballast Point Brewing and Spirits established its production brewery in 1996; the distillery was added in 2008.  The first craft distillery in San Diego, Ballast Point Spirits is one of over 30 operating distilleries in the state of California.

The New York International Spirits Competition was held October 19th-20th and was the first major international spirits competition with TRADE ONLY judges comprised of: buyers from the top retail stores, restaurant owners, cocktail bars, hotel beverage directors, distributors and importers. Entries were judged on appearance, aroma, taste, mouthfeel and finish.
